Portfolio Site or Conversion Site?

Designers want a gallery; owners want the phone to ring. Both are fair. When they compete on the same hero, both lose. Decide whether you are building a portfolio site or a conversion site before you draw the first frame. The payer decides the hierarchy.

Homepage wireframe choosing a portfolio site hero versus a quote CTA

A company site is not a portfolio site

Service, proof, ask. The gallery sits one level down. “See our work” is weaker in the hero than “we can launch you this month”. Therefore, case studies become evidence, not the only story. Pair this with enquiry leaks if traffic already exists.

When a portfolio site is the right lead

Work leads, but every case still ends with a quote. We use the same rule on our own site: look, understand, write. In addition, each project page needs a sector, a result and a next step — not only a moodboard.

The hybrid business website

Home page converts; a work archive shows craft. Both sit in the menu. That structure wins service queries and “show me examples” buyers. As a result, the portfolio site does not fight the offer. If you want this split drawn on your current pages, ask us. Nielsen Norman Group’s notes on homepage purpose still hold: one primary task.

How to brief a hybrid without building two sites

Write two sentences: the commercial promise and the craft promise. The homepage carries the first; the portfolio site archive carries the second. If both sentences try to live in the hero, neither is read. We storyboard that split on paper before we open Elementor.

Then pick three cases that match the offer you sell this quarter, not your favourite aesthetic. A portfolio site that only shows passion projects trains the wrong leads. Align the archive with the quote form and the sales call script.
